The relationship of sample sizes and mean length of utterances for typically developing children aged 2 to 4 years
Chung Bhu-Ja

Abstract
Mean length of utterances(MLU) based on language samples is frequently used as a valuable estimate of young children¡®s language development. It, however, is often impractical to devote the amount of time collecting, transcribing, and analysing the recommended number of utterances. The goal of this study was to demonstrate the consistency of MLU calculated across different sampling conditions(first 25 utterances, last 25 utterances, and quasi-random 25 samples from the total 50 samples). The quasi-random samples were based on every 2nd of the total utterances, and considered to more closely simulate clinical practices in real. Overall, the language samples were quite consistent across the difference sampling conditions. MLUs from different sampling conditions were not significantly different, and the results demonstrate that one can reliably and efficiently use MLUs on smaller language sample sizes. Implications and limitations for the efficient use of language sample analysis on smaller sizes are discussed.
